Community Member Spotlights

Ongoing

Celebrating the people behind African research software

Launched in 2023, the Community Member Spotlights feature members of the RSSE Africa community through interview-style articles — sharing their backgrounds, career paths, projects, challenges, and advice for others.

Each spotlight is published on this website and shared on LinkedIn. Spotlights are available in both English and French where community members have provided translations.

Research Software Spotlights

Ongoing

Putting African research software centre stage

Launched in 2026, the Research Software Spotlights showcase software built by African researchers and engineers — exploring the problem it solves, the people who develop and maintain it, and the researchers who rely on it.

Each spotlight is published on this website and promoted on LinkedIn. Spotlights include the story behind the software, voices from the development team, and examples of real-world use.

Showcasing the compute and data infrastructure powering African research

Launched in 2026, the Infrastructure Spotlights showcase the national, regional, and institutional compute and data facilities that power research across Africa — exploring the resources they provide, the teams that build and operate them, and the researchers who rely on them.

Each spotlight is published on this website and promoted on LinkedIn. Spotlights include the story behind the facility, voices from the team, and examples of the research it enables.

Mapping African Research Software Stakeholders

Past

Finding and connecting research software stakeholders across the continent

An initiative to find and connect research software developers, funders, organisations, and other stakeholders across the African continent.

The mapping builds on a 2021/2022 Research Software Alliance (ReSA) survey of research software initiatives in the Global South. Talarify extended this work through additional web searches, network outreach, and engagement at the World Science Forum. The R Shiny web app was developed by Nomalungelo Maphanga and Anelda van der Walt as part of OLS Cohort 6.
