Internationally, Research Software Engineers started organising thanks to the work of the Software Sustainability Institute in the United Kingdom.
As research software creators started finding each other, the UK Research Software Engineers Association was formed. That initial group is now know as the Society of Research Software Engineers and there are other similar groups scattered around the globe.
Research Software Engineers International tries to provide an umbrella for all these groups. Delegates from the African continent have been participants in the first and second International RSE leaders workshops, with RSSE Africa presented at the second workshop. SORSE provided a venue for online Research Software Events in 2020 when the pandemic disrupted in-person activities.
The international RSE Slack workspace is a great place to meet peers and learn about opportunities, events, and resources or ask questions.
