Episode 1: A Conversation with Researchers Who Code

10 October 2024 @ 8:30 - 10:00 am UTC (your local time)

In this inaugeral meetup we will meet several researchers from who spend a significant part of their day programming. We will hear about their projects, preferred programming languages, the teams they work in, their career journeys, and what advice they can share to fellow research software developers.

Dr Biandri Joubert

University of Witwatersrand, South Africa

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

I am a post-doctoral research fellow- and I specialize in import and export law, specifically the import and export of agricultural products. I am particularly interested in applying R programming to legal and interdisciplinary research and I mostly do so working with text and trade statistics.

Dr Gaurav Bhalerao

Nuffield Dept of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, UK

Postdoctoral Research Associate

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN), developing tools and algorithms for analyzing multimodal MRI data. My research focuses on detecting predictive brain biomarkers, creating machine learning applications for automated detection, and developing neuroimaging pipelines. As the UKRN local network lead, I work with others to expand the Reproducible Research Oxford community through events at the University of Oxford. I also hold a Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) fellowship, engaging with the research software community and promoting best practices through interdisciplinary approaches.

Mr Mahmoud Abdelrazek

Advanced Research Computing, University College London, UK

Senior Research Data Consultant

I’m a Data Consultant / Steward from Portsaid, Egypt, working at the Advanced Research Computing, University College London. I like reading 📚 running 🏃🏾‍♂️ swimming 🏊🏾‍♂️ cycling 🚴 and thinking about data problems. My background is in geology, databases, spatiotemporal and medical data analytics.

Mr Prasad Sutar

University of Bristol, UK

Research Software Engineer

I work as RSE on the project called OpenGHG software dealing with data sharing and analysis hub for greenhouse gases research. Before joining the RSE team, I worked on Systems Development Integration and Modelling team within Rolls-Royce and Software development and automation testing projects at Infosys Ltd. I am Bristol alumnus from MSc Robotics 2022 batch and participated in the research and development of Sparse Training of Deep Predictive Coding Network that involved reducing the dependency on High Computing resources from complex training of models. I am focused on aligning IT practices with sustainability principles and lowering the environmental impacts of the software.
